What do you call a number that can’t sit still?
March 14th (or 3/14) is the day we celebrate the Greek letter “π” as a mathematical constant that represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The Babylonians (1900 – 1680 B.C.) and the Egyptians (1650 B.C.) were the first to estimate pi’s value between 3.125 and 3.1605, while Archimedes of Syracuse (287 – 212 B.C.) calculated a close approximation. Pi is a lot older than you thought, isn’t it? Today we lovingly know π as 3.141592653589793 … (you get the picture).
Some people think celebrating “π” is “irrational,” but they also probably think Pi Day is only about pie so we will just leave them be.
